Message far advanced to start with.

There is a sweet spot for timing advance for a given RPM and airflow - the ignition timing needs to occur at a specific point before TDC such that peak cylinder pressure occurs about 14 degrees after TDC. If peak cylinder pressure occurs before or after this point, torque will suffer, and because horsepower is a function of torque, so too will horsepower suffer at the same RPM the torque does.
